NFL Network Commentary

Robert Seidman of TV by the Numbers chimes in on the NFL’s experiment with its own network. Money quote:

The NFL probably has too much hubris, even now, to fold up shop with the NFL Network and package the games it kept for itself up back to the TV Networks …

I understand greed and hubris as much as the next guy. Sometimes it pays off. But this isn’t one of those times. The good old fashioned greed of extorting the television networks, who will in turn extort the advertisers, who will gladly be extorted since they cherish the demographics of people who watch NFL games, seems to be the way to go.

Check here for background on Suddenlink and the NFL Network.

20 Mbps Internet Launched in Lubbock

On Saturday, Nov. 22, Suddenlink’s operation in Lubbock, Texas, launched a new tier of Internet service, featuring a download speed of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps), the fastest known speed of any competitive option in that area, and the fastest available anywhere in Suddenlink-served territories.

This new service was enabled, in part, by the fiber ring the company constructed in West Texas, a project that was completed earlier this year and which has also enabled the launch of video-on-demand service in that area.

New Care Center Opens in Parkersburg, W. Va.

Suddenlink CEO Jerry Kent (left) joins W. Va. Commerce Secretary Kelley Goes for a ribbon-cutting at the grand opening ceremony of the company’s new customer care center in Parkersburg, W. Va.

Suddenlink CEO Jerry Kent, COO Tom McMillin, Atlantic Region Vice President Dave Bach, and approximately 40 of the company’s nearly 800 West-Virginia employees gathered Tuesday, with a number of state and local public officials, to celebrate the opening of Suddenlink’s new customer care center in Parkersburg.

The new facility — which will handle customer calls from a five-state area — was constructed for $3.5 million; offers 18,000 square feet of workspace; features state-of-the-art communications technology; and, fully staffed, can house more than 220 employees, more than double the capacity of the company’s prior facility in the area.

The Parkersburg facility is one of several such facilities Suddenlink operates. The others are located in Greenville, N.C.; Tyler, Texas; and Lubbock, Texas.

During his remarks at Tuesday’s event, Mr. Kent said his company’s willingness to make such investments was “one of the reasons why Suddenlink was recognized in the recent JD Power survey as providing the most-improved customer service.”

DTV Countdown: Three Months to Go

With only three months until the transition from analog to digital broadcast television occurs on Feb. 17, industry expert Stephen Effros recommends that TV watchers not wait until the last minute to get ready.

Effros says viewers have three options to consider when preparing for the transition:

First, if they have an older analog TV set, viewers can buy an analog-to-digital converter box to connect to their television. (These converter boxes are generally available at major TV and/or electronics stores. The federal government has set up a coupon program for households in need of this type of device.)

Second, viewers might consider purchasing a more recently manufactured TV set that has a digital tuner already built-in.

Third, they can connect all TV sets to a cable or other TV service provider.

While Effros recommends that all TV viewers prepare early for the Feb. 17 transition, he believes advanced preparation is especially critical for people who select the first option: a converter box.

“The federal government has a limited supply of coupons to help with the cost of those boxes,” he said. “Meanwhile, demand will be high for these boxes, so stores may not always have them in stock.”
