3-D Continues to Roll

At the NYT’s “Gadgetwise” blog, Eric Taub reports on Panasonic’s love affair with 3-D

According to Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, the company’s general manager for its Blu-ray Disc Group, 3-D television “could be as significant as the transformation from standard- to high-definition TV.”

Beware Email Scams

We’ve warned about this kind of thing before, but it’s a warning worth repeating in light of a post today at Michael Willner’s blog.

What Willner ultimately advises his company’s customers to do applies to Suddenlink’s customers, as well. In short:

Suddenlink does not send unsolicited email requesting personal or account information. Whenever you receive such email, ignore and delete it.

If you have a question about whether an email is legitimate, give us a call.

It’s also a good rule of thumb to not click on links nor open attachments in unsolicited email.

DTV Transition Update

Things have been relatively quiet, of late, on the DTV-transition front. According to Broadcasting & Cable magazine, the calm may be justified:

Acting NTIA chief Anna Gomez is “cautiously optimistic” there will be enough coupons and converter boxes for the DTV transition in June and that interruptions to service will be minimized …

If you still want to play it safe, and aren’t yet hooked up to cable, consider contacting us today.

Suddenlink in the News

Suddenlink’s Alexandria, La., team continues its support for the The Food Bank of Central Louisiana, with food drives at schools in Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, LaSalle, Rapides and Winn Parishes.

The Louisiana cable association honors Suddenlink with three awards, one for the above-noted Food Bank program, another for a DTV education program, and the third for Maryce Cunningham, for outstanding service.

In Paris, Texas, the local paper has the scoop on what happened “when a landscaping crew from a third party cut an underground fiber cable,” disrupting service for Suddenlink customers.

Finally, an industry trade publication reports on the hiring of Tyler Nau as vice president, finance, for Suddenlink’s commercial and advertising operations.

Condolences

Our collective sympathies are extended to the family of Sgt. Christopher David Loza. From the Abilene Reporter News:

When you ask Amelia Gonzales to remember her son Sgt. Christopher David Loza, who died Friday from an unidentified illness, a flood of memories emerges.

She recalls him easily as a boy, his ruminations about becoming a firefighter or a police officer, his love of softball and baseball, something he carried from the age of 4 to his teens.

She remembers a person who held his Catholic faith close, a lover of the Abilene High Eagles, the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys, and a man who was a loving husband to his wife, Kristena Loza, and father to his 3-year-old daughter Iliana.

He never wanted for friends, she said. And he also was someone willing to work hard, earning an associate degree in criminal justice and working diligently to provide for his family.

His last job before deploying to Iraq as an Army reservist in November was at Suddenlink Communications in San Angelo, where he had earned his degree from Howard College and where his wife attends Angelo State University.

Visit the Reporter News online to read the entire tribute to Sgt. Loza.

Where Do You Get Your News?

If you’re like most other people, the answer is “Internet or TV.” No surprise, but fewer and fewer are relying on newspapers.

Ark. Techs Win Gold, Silver, Bronze

Suddenlink technicians from Central Arkansas combined their skills and knowledge to place first overall at the recent “Arkansas Cable Tech Games,” hosted by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE).

Designed to test and reward technical excellence, the competition included the following events: cable splicing (including fiber splicing), “Cable Jeopardy,” Metallic Time Domain Reflectometry (MTDR) reading and black-box meter reading. (MTDR reading involves a piece of test equipment that indicates where there is a fault on a cable line. Black-box meter reading involves analysis of different signal configurations; in other words, a tech has to take the signal reading and tell how the box is configured.)

In addition to earning the team gold medal for Suddenlink, several company techs took home individual awards, including:

Greg Burchfield (Cabot) — gold medals in cable splicing, “Cable Jeopardy,” and overall individual performance; plus a silver medal for MTDR reading

Clinton Ford (Russellville) — gold medal in fiber splicing and bronze medals in black-box meter reading and overall individual peformance

Randy Oliger (Cabot) — bronze medal in cable splicing

John Yates (Stuttgart) — silver medal in black-box meter reading

Nate Richardson (Branson) — gold medal in black-box meter reading

Ronald Malik (Russellville) — silver medal in fiber splicing

DTV Converter Shortage?

Michael Willner picks up on a trade press report about certain members of Congress voicing concerns that “the demand for converter boxes prior to the June 12th DTV deadline may outstrip the supply [of boxes] available from manufacturers.”

As Willner reminds readers, cable TV is a great option for avoiding those potential headaches.
