Broadband for America

Late last week, NCTA — the primary, national trade association representing Suddenlink and similar companies — helped launch a new coalition: Broadband for America. Their goal: “ensuring that broadband is available to, and used by, every household and business in America.”

NCTA Chief Kyle McSlarrow explains.

Check here for a list of coalition members.

Suddenlink News Round Up

In the time we’ve been away, there have been a number of notable Suddenlink news items, including the launches of Video on Demand (VOD) service in Lake Conroe, Texas; and TV Caller ID service in Abilene, Snyder, and Sweetwater, Texas. (Future expansions of the VOD and TV Caller ID services will be announced as they are confirmed.)

In addition, Suddenlink advertising exec Todd Harris won some much-deserved national recognition. Congrats!

Congrats to all.

Battles of Fall TV Season Underway

And last night, at least, NBC and Fox scored early wins:

“The season premiere of The Office and newcomer Community earned NBC the highest-rated hour in primetime Thursday, while Fox, with season premieres for dramas Bones and Fringe edged out the Peacock in overall ratings for the night.”

Web Video Viewing Increases

Michael Willner offers a summary, drawn from this NewTeeVee report:

Web video continues to grow in viewership, based on the August Nielsen VideoCensus. Nielsen’s latest report indicates that in August, just over 139 million Internet users watched video online. That was an increase of 2.4 percent over July and a jump of 41 percent over August of last year. Those 139 million viewers watched over 11 billion video streams, averaging over 80 streams per viewer.

Buyer Beware, Part 4

From Texas to Missouri to Maine, DirecTV is not having a very good year:

Debbie Seavey of Kennebunk says she signed a contract with [DirecTV], and that from day one, it hasn’t worked. However, the company won’t let her out of her contract.

The company’s response?

A [DirecTV] customer service representative says that once you sign a contract, you will have to pay, whether you are satisfied with your service or not.

Suddenlink offers bundles of TV, Internet, and phone services with no contract required.

Defining Broadband

Paul Rodriguez chimes in

As cable’s history of providing faster and faster speeds demonstrates, the FCC’s definition has never served as a constraint on what is offered to consumers. What’s needed is a generic definition that focuses on the core functionality of the broadband service that customers are receiving today.

More VOD to Go Around

We’ve tripled the capacity of our video-on-demand (VOD) platform — from more than 3,000 to approximately 10,000 hours — in all Suddenlink VOD markets in the south-central U.S., with a comparable capacity expansion planned for later this year in other Suddenlink VOD markets such as those in West Virginia.

We have also started the process of negotiating incremental content to fill this expanded capacity, notably a slate of “free on demand” selections from the fall season of NBC Universal’s broadcast and cable networks, including these new and returning series:

    Community (NBC)
    Mercy (NBC)
    Trauma (NBC)
    The Biggest Loser (NBC)
    The Office (NBC)
    Parks and Recreation (NBC)
    Heroes (NBC)
    Southland (NBC)
    Destination Truth (Syfy)
    Stargate Universe (Syfy)
    Scare Tactics (Syfy)
    Sanctuary (Syfy)
