Two More 20 Meg Markets

Lubbock, Midland, Georgtown, Leader, and Pflugerville, Texas, are now joined by Bryan and College Station, Texas, as markets where Suddenlink has deployed DOCSIS 3.0 technology and introduced up to 20 Megabit-per-second (Mbps) download speeds for residential high-speed Internet customers.

Further expansion of the 20 Mbps service will be announced as new markets are confirmed.

Happy Birthday, ESPN

The sports network turned 30 years old yesterday.

Multichannel News interviews ESPN President George Bodenheimer. An excerpt:

MCN: What event or deal would you point to that you feel officially put ESPN on the national sports map?

GB: I think there were a few of them, starting with our coverage of the NCAA [men's] basketball tournament when we televised the early rounds — that was huge for us.

Also the America’s Cup, which hadn’t been televised previously, was big. We were bringing back pictures from Australia that no one had ever seen before.

Then we finished it off with the acquisition of the NFL rights package in 1987. I think those were the three distinguishing moments that put us on the map.

Geo-what?

Geo-survivable.

As in … “Suddenlink has deployed geo-survivable equipment.”

Granted, it’s not a term you hear every day, but it is an important one, because this equipment helps us sustain phone service during natural disasters.

Buyer Beware, Part 3

Monday, we noted concerns about AT&T and DirecTV contracts and early cancellation fees. Those concerns are apparently not isolated to one family but shared among several.

Case in point:

Elizabeth Koziatek, of St. Charles, plans to cancel her DirecTV service this week, but she’s wrangling with the company over whether she should be on the hook for a $240 cancellation fee. She bought U-Verse on Aug. 14, and she said representatives at both AT&T and DirecTV assured her she wouldn’t pay a penalty to cancel her existing satellite service
