Future of U-Verse Questioned

According to this analyst

We expect dramatic cutbacks in U-verse CAPEX [capital expenditures] over the next two years. The service has pretty much been a bust. For AT&T, 3Q09 will probably “be identified as the quarter in which the U-verse star started to fade.”

AT&T’s U-verse will not be “getting in stride” or “picking up steam.” There are indications that point to significant pullback on CAPEX for the service in 2010 and 2011. The reason why these are not “hyper growth” times for U-verse is that the main technology used was doomed from the start.

Exclusive to the Web

Per CNET News, via Michael Willner

Hulu has capitalized on providing ad-supported online video of television shows and movies to its users, but Paramount Digital Entertainment is betting that web re-runs [aren't] the only way to make online video profitable. The studio has created a professionally produced show, named “Circle of Eight,” exclusively for web viewers. The show kicked off yesterday on social networking site MySpace.

Cable in Asia

CableTechTalk has published a guest post by John Medeiros, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA). Medeiros challenges the age-old “grass is always greener” myth. An excerpt:

Some American observers have argued that Asia is so far ahead in broadband that the U.S. should look here for tips on how to catch up. But with 56% of US broadband connections supplied by the cable industry [according to SNL Kagan], and with many parts of the country witnessing aggressive, creative competition between cable companies, satellite providers, and traditional telcos, the U.S., as viewed from Asia, looks mighty good.

The entire post is a fascinating read for those interested in such things.

Cord-Cutting Not as Easy as Some Think

So concludes Michael Turk:

If … you are subscribing to cable because you enjoy the tremendous variety of cable programming — everything from Entourage and Jon & Kate Plus Eight to Real Housewives of Orange County and ESPN sports, then you simply won’t find the programs, or the quality of programs available anywhere else.

Turk’s entire argument is worth reading.
