‘Africa’ Debuts on Discovery Tonight

The creators of “Life,” “Frozen Planet,” and “Planet Earth” debut their newest project tonight at 9 p.m. CT on Discovery Channel.  The production team spent 1,598 days on location in 27 countries to produce “Africa,” a seven-part documentary series that explores the continent’s wonders and wildlife.

Two New Documentaries Recall 9/11 Events

Airing tonight on TLC at 7:00 and 9:00 CT, “9-11 Emergency Room” documents how doctors, nurses and paramedics at a small New York City hospital responded as they treated attack victims.

“The 9-11 Surfer,” which airs tomorrow night at 7:00 CT on Discovery Channel, looks for the truth behind the story of 9/11 survivor Pasquale Buzzelli. For the first time on national television, the Port Authority employee tells how he “surfed” down with the falling debris from a 22nd floor stairwell of the World Trade Center’s North Tower and was rescued.

Discovery Rolls Out ‘Texas Car Wars’ Series

Tomorrow night, Discovery Channel travels deep in the heart of Texas and into the fast-paced world of auto flipping. In “Texas Car Wars,” teams from four auto-body shops in and around Austin engage in intense bidding wars to find the most valuable jalopies and turn them into resell jackpots. Teams have 10 minutes to inspect cars, but they are not allowed to start them.

Two Cool New Series Debut Tonight on Discovery

Two Discovery Channel series premiering tonight, “Yukon Men” and “Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice,” travel to some of the coolest spots on Earth.

Yukon Men” takes viewers to Tanana, Alaska, the 200 residents of which must battle life-threatening predators and struggle to find food and heat during one of the most brutal winters on record.

Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice” follows three teams whose very livelihoods depend on mining gold hidden under four feet of solid ice. Split-second thinking, extreme focus, and teamwork are the keys to staying alive.

‘Dirty Jobs’ Goes Down Under Tonight on Discovery

For years, Mike Rowe, star of Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” has been saluting unsung laborers by introducing us to some of the most dangerous, dirty, smelly and yet vital professions in America. But in the coming weeks, the show’s adventurous host takes on Australia.

In tonight’s episode, Rowe journeys to Australia’s northern coast to work with Aboriginals, who have lived off the land for more than 40,000 years. Upcoming episodes feature adventures in Adelaide, where Rowe helps capture a protected snake species; and Darwin, where he helps control a toad epidemic that is threatening the area’s ecosystem.

Shows Worth Watching This Summer

There are plenty of reasons to watch TV this summer, writes The Wrap’s Kimberly Potts. Among the 56 shows that she details are TNT’s new “Dallas” series, the return of AMC drama “Breaking Bad,” the third season of A&E’s “Storage Wars,” and ABC Family’s new original drama series “Bunheads.” She also recommends summer fare from MTV (“MTV Movie Awards”), The Weather Channel (“Hurricane Hunters”), TLC (“Craft Wars”), FX (“Anger Management”), USA (“Suits”) and Discovery Channel (“Shark Week”).

Nickelodeon Grabs 40 Daytime Emmy Nominations

Nickelodeon earned 40 nominations for the Daytime Emmy Awards, which recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television. Nickelodeon’s “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness” and “Penguins of Madagascar” each  received eight nominations. The awards will be presented June 23.

Among other cable networks earning multiple nominations were Disney Channel (6), Cartoon Network (3), MTV (3) and Discovery Channel (2). These networks and Nickelodeon are available to all or virtually all Suddenlink customers who have what is commonly known as Expanded Basic TV service.

Discovery: ‘Secrets of Bin Laden’s Lair’

One year after Navy Seals killed Osama bin Laden, the Discovery Channel will present “Secrets of Bin Laden’s Lair,” a one-hour special tomorrow night at 10 p.m. ET. The program is said to be the first comprehensive TV report on the valuable intelligence seized during the raid on bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. The treasure trove of information included hard drives, computers, and thousands of personal papers and video snippets.

‘Deadliest Catch’ Season Premiere is 100th Episode

Season eight of “Deadliest Catch” kicks off tomorrow night (9 p.m. ET) on Discovery Channel with the show’s 100th episode. When fishing quota are slashed by almost half, the captains are forced to make some tough choices to stay afloat, and bonds of family and friendship will be tested by hirings, firings, and deck changes.
